  SAVING ENERGY

Energy Saving Tips & Tricks

  • Have your heating/cooling system serviced bi-annually so that it is operating at maximum efficiency.
  • Install energy efficient, Energy star heating & cooling equipment when its time to replace your entire system.
  • Change or clean return air and/or furnace filters monthly.
  •  Check your homes insulation.  The recommendation from the Department of Energy for our region is at least an R-38 (10-15 inches) in the attic.
  •  Check ductwork for air leaks and gaps. Additional insulation can save as much as 10%.
  • Install a programmable thermostat which can be adjusted according to your air conditioning heating needs.
  • Be sure to shut your heating & cooling system off before opening windows & doors during nice weather.
  • Check seals and weather stripping around windows and doors.
  • Keep your outdoor ground unit clear from brush and debris.
  • If you notice your unit is running longer than normal or making unusual noises it's best to call for service.

Additional energy saving tips for cooling

  • Set your thermostat at 80° or higher. You can save 2-3% on your electric bill for every degree warmer.
  •  Use fans during the summer to create a wind chill effect. A ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting with no reduction in comfort.
  • Consider double pane windows, reflective film or retractable awnings that will reduce heat gain.
  • Keep blinds and drapes closed on the sunny side of house to save on air conditioning costs.
  • When painting your home or replacing the roof, use light colors to reflect heat.
  • Close fireplace damper when not in use. This will help reduce air conditioning repair expenses.
  • Plant shade trees on the west and south sides of your home to reduce heat from the sun.
  •  Make sure lamps, electronics and appliances are not near your thermostat. Heat from these can items can   cause youre a/c to run longer than necessary.
  •  Use exhaust fans to remove heat from your kitchen and bathroom.
  • Vent the dryer outside to reduce heat & moisture in your home. Line dry clothes as much as possible.
  •  Check attic ventilation. Areas under poorly vented attics are much hotter.
  • Dont set your thermostat at a colder than normal setting when you turn on your a/c. It will not cool your home any faster could result in excessive cooling and expense.
  • Use your main oven less by using toaster ovens, microwaves, crock-pots and barbecue's to reduce the amount of heat generated.
Also using the air dry setting on your dishwasher will produce less heat.
